This One's for Mike Chang!

You know Mike Chang, right? He's a character on Glee. He's the best dancer in the club (Oops. I mean, was...), but not such a rockin' singer. He did sing with his girlfriend-at-the-time, Tina, once, though, and it was one of my favorite songs they've done. What makes it so great is the dancing they do, that Mike choreographs. I don't know that it'd be as good a song if it was just singing.

Mike and his parents had an issue for a few episodes. See, he wanted to go to school to be a dancer, but his dad said he wanted him to find a career that might actually go somewhere. That was the gist of it. My point is, his dad was blind to the fact that dancing made Mike happy, and he can't just squash his dreams like that. Aren't parents supposed to be accepting and encouraging of their children?

I haven't seen it a lot in real life, so I don't know if there are actually parents like Mike's. But if there are, what are you doing? I get trying to help your kid make the right decisions that will lead them on the right path so that his or her life turns out well, but to force him to make the choices you want him to make without taking his feelings into consideration is a hindrance, not a help. How can he learn to make the right decisions by himself if you're always doing it for him?

The same goes for people who aren't parents. If you're pushing someone to do something you want them to do, either because it benefits you in some way, or even if you genuinely feel it's the right choice, just stop. It doesn't help you, and it doesn't help the person you're pushing. It creates a dependence that is very difficult to overcome.

That's my "Fix It" advice for today. Try guiding others to the right destination, without interfering in their ultimate decisions. You may find that what makes others happy, even if it's not what you originally set out for them to do, will make you happy, too.

(This video doesn't exactly mimic what I'm trying to say, but there are some moments, and it's a good song, so I'm using it anyway.)
